Aside from the whirling dervish ceremony (check out my question about that here Thirty kilometers east of the town of Tunceli in east central Turkey stands the holy mountain of Duzgunbaba. According to local legends the mountain was a sacred place of the Hurrian/Hittite storm god Teshub long before the arrival of Islam. Upon the peak is a cave where lived a Sufi saint, by the name of Duzgunbaba, in the late 13th century. Sufism ( tasavvuf) is an Islamic modality that emphasizes self-discipline and personal reform through spiritual practices beside the essential practices that comprise Islamic orthopraxy. These spiritual practices include dhikr, individual or collective recitation of litanies composed of supplicatory prayers, Qur’anic passages, and Sufism consists of much more than the order founded by Rumi, of course, and its practices are as diverse as the regions in which it thrives. From West and North Africa, to Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia, Sufism has many interfaces with the practices of average people and mystics alike. In Turkey, as well as in many other countries of the middle east, there certainly are Sufi groups or tariqas that are quite alive but often they're not very public or 'official'. Providing visitors here with a deeper view into Sufism beyond Whirling Dervish performances as ‘entertainment’ is needed.
